Must do’s while visiting Itasca State Park

Mississippi Headwaters

If there is one stop you need to making while visiting Itasca State Park, it is the Mississippi Headwaters. A path leads from the Mary Gibbs Center to the Headwaters. The gift shop and cafe are open seasonally, so be sure to grab a treat or something to eat if you plan to visit during the warmer months! After reaching the river, cross the rocks to the other side, walk over the log bridge, or wade through the shallow water. Be sure to take the full loop of the trail on your way back. The Schoolcraft Trailhead connects to this loop, so explore that trail if you have more time!

Preachers Grove + Peace Pipe Vista

Preachers Grove and Peace Pipe Vista are scenic stops, easily accessible from the Main Park Drive or Brower Trail. Preacher’s Grove, known for once holding a preacher’s conference, is surrounded by 300+ year old red pines and is the perfect place for relaxing and reflecting. Peace Pipe Vista looks west across Lake Itasca. Follow the steep staircase down to a lower deck for an iconic overlook of the lake.

Wilderness Drive + Main Park Drive

No matter the season, the park is worth traveling. In the warmer months, it is common to see motorcyclists and bicyclists sharing the road. Wilderness Drive is a 10-mile, one-way road that weaves through the more remote portions of the park, with old-growth pines and hardwoods on your left and 100-year old aspens and sugar maples on your right. Several trailheads are accessible from Wilderness Drive. Main Park Drive connects the most popular park attractions and is also very scenic. Some portions of these roads are seasonal and closed during the winter months.

Lake Itasca

Whether you decide to stop by the swimming beach, take a boat tour from Lake Itasca Tours, or enjoy a leisurely hike around Lake Itasca, visiting is a must. For a more immersive lake experience, stop by Itasca Sports and rent a pontoon, kayak, canoe, or paddle board. Keep an eye out for loons, bald eagles, and other wildlife!

Aiton Heights Fire Tower

The fire tower is a short walk from the parking lot on Wilderness Drive and is also accessible from Ozawindib Trail. Panoramic views of the park are the highlight after climbing the stairway 100’ to the top of the tower. If heights aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other park activities and trails.

Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center

Located near the park’s East Entrance, the Visitor Center features interactive exhibit galleries, gift shop, and information station with maps and brochures that will tell you everything you need to know about the park. The Visitor Center is open year round and is located next to the historic Douglas Lodge Restaurant which is open seasonally. Nearby is the dock for Lake Itasca Tours, which is a naturalist-narrated 10-mile, 2-hour boat tour.
